| On Tuesday we sight Fakarava, the Tuamotus' second largest coral atoll
and a UNESCO protected nature reserve. After passing through the Garue Straights with its current doing up to 6 knots, we drop anchor in the lagoon by the village Rotoava. |

Compared to Tuamotus standards Rotoava is rather highly developed; they have a large pier, a school, a small shop, a superb bakery and, of course, .... , a church. |
| Life goes at a slow pace here. The main income comes from breeding pearls in the protective lagoon. Man and beast live with and from the sea … even dogs start fishing here. | ![]() |
The main attraction is to be found under water though - in the crystal clear water of the outer reef and in the current ridden waters of the straits, where one finds not only a huge diversity of coral and myriads of fish, but also lots of sharks and other large predators like this "harmless" nurse-shark and this huge and very impressive manta ray.

More about us and the beautiful coral atoll Fakarava, right here, next week.
Until then … take care!
