CW31 2001

29.07.2001 - 04.08.2001

Today is Sunday, July 29. We're close to Moraira, in the bay El Rinconet - and today we can sleep as long as we want to.
Everything is quiet, idyllic and comforting. And that's how we want it to stay. So first of all we enjoy a long breakfast. Apart from that we'll only do the necessities today, like watching Formel 1 (car racing) and listening to the radio station SWR 3.
After all they are broadcasting the interview they taped last week today. Unfortunately they didn't send our greetings so we'll just do that again now. Hereby we greet our Moms Dorothee and Irmgard and my two brothers René and Jean-Pierre, as well as our friends in Bavaria.
Today we did what is also quoted on the first page of our homepage … easy going.

It's Monday and we're finally going to scuba-dive. Today we'll take the dinghy to the dive site. It turns out to be a short but nice dive, including feeding the fish. We took a little bread with us in a bag and unpacked it under water. In no time at all a big feast started all around us and the fish came really close.
Even if it was only a short dive - diving makes you hungry!
Back on board we rinse off our diving equipment and put it away and then we get ready for a shore liberty. We go to Moraira.
A beautiful neat little town with interesting people. In a narrow little alley we discover a small restaurant where they serve Tapas. We order one of everything: cooked squid, grilled fish, deep fried fish, crab legs, grilled vegetables, cooked potatoes with a spicy sauce and Tortillias. Entertainment for the meal is provided by a strange, elderly native whos activities greatly amuse us.
After strolling back to the dinghy we make our way back on board. There we enjoy a sip of wine and the beautiful peacefulness.

Today, Tuesday, we also spend in El Rinconet. And why not? It's nice and protected here. And every day there are things to be seen, getting more by the day. Even if, for one, it's only the totally idiotic anchor manoeuvres, there's always something. After all the beginning of holiday- time is becoming noticeable and it's getting more crowded every day. The bays, just like we've know them from Mallorca - full!
Speaking of Mallorca - on Mallorca we had visitors for a few days, Petra and Martin from Hildesheim travelled with us for 4 days. Well, that was our "introduction -sailing" and now we've got a crew for our Atlantic crossing.
On 01.12.2001 we'll take off for that toern together with both of them. We'll take another short trip today, since we need a few more ingredients for our dinner. Tonight we'll make a Paella for the first time - which brings us straight to our culinary excursion: Paella with chicken.
You need:
8 chicken legs
400 gr. Paella rice
1.5 litres broth
1 red and 1 green pepper
olive oil
Paella spices
Put the chicken legs into a saucepan, add 1.5 litre water, a little salt and pepper and cook them until they're done. To make the chicken flavour stronger, add two chicken-cubes.
Remove the skin from the legs and take the meat of the bones and cut it into bite-sized chunks.
Fry the chicken meat in olive oil in a large, deep pan for a short while and take it out of the pan again and put it aside. Put the rice into this pan and pour the broth over it. Now carefully stir the rice and distribute it evenly and then, DON'T stir again.
Sprinkle the Paella spices evenly over it, add freshly grounded pepper and cayenne pepper to taste, but DON'T stir, that's important!
Altogether the cooking time is 25-30 minutes.
About 10 Minutes before it is done add the diced peppers and the chicken meat to the rice and let it cook. DON'T stir!!!

As soon as the broth has evaporated completely, the Paella is ready - and then you may poke into the rice with a small spoon. If the rice sticks to the bottom of the pan a little it's perfect!
Take the pan off the stove, cover it with a newspaper and let it sit for another 5 minutes. Then serve.

You can vary the recipe by adding different vegetables, like carrots, peas, tomatoes or beans. For different meats one could use a mixture of hare and chicken, or a typical fish - seafood combination. Depending on the meat you're using you need to use different kinds of broth, or simply go for a vegetable broth.
The Paella spices are a ready-made mixture that one can surely also get outside of Spain, just like the rice.

And, we'll also do what the restaurants here usually do, we'll show you what everything on the menu looks like.

Today, Wednesday, we'll do some real work again. Thomas hops into his wetsuit and dives into the cool waters to clean the ships rumps and the water passage. I grab a needle and sailors thread and climb onto the roof to fix the sails reefs since they broke a few days ago.
After working we refresh ourselves with a little swim.
I must say, it's really quite special if you just have to walk three steps and can jump into the sea. And in the mornings, just after waking up - out of the bunk and into the water. Nice!
But then again … our Knut doesn't enjoy that. Who is Knut?
And what was that picture in last weeks log? That moose?
Well, that's Knut, the ship moose. I know, we should long have introduced Knut ... but it's never too late! And it matched the interview with SWR3 so nicely, since they have a Black Forest moose. Maybe they'll show mercy and Knut will get some company?!

On Thursday morning we weigh anchor and leave Moraira. Firstly it is getting a little uncomfortable here since the weather is changing and secondly we've really been here long enough. It is very hazy and hot today - there is something in the air … Well, let's wait and see. We do listen to the weather forecasts regularly, but they are rather short here and hardly ever (or never) correct. Well, we're ready for a surprise. We use the motor for the 10 miles north to Javea and anchor there in Cala Calce. A nice place to drop anchor, but not suitable for sailors who would also like to go ashore or into town. You can't get anywhere or moor anywhere with the dinghy. What a pity!

Actually we could have welcomed the Friday with a song: oh what a night!
We woke up every 1 ˝ hours! The wind turned all the time and with it the ship and that always causes the anchor-guide to start beeping. Actually this anchor-guide is a good thing to have, but unfortunately it makes mistakes now and again and causes false alarms. And then there were 2 cheeky mosquitoes and - hasn't happened in a long time - a strong swell.
It is the 70th day of our journey and at 7 am we weigh anchor and take off. Again, just around the corner, to Isla de Portichol. There's considerable swell here as well, but lots better then before. Unfortunately there aren't many bays along this part of the coast and in weather like this they don't offer much protection.
It's ok for the day though and we can't spend the night here anyway.
So we swim a little, sleep a little, Thomas fishes a little and we generally do a little of this and a little of that. And then it's time to find a place for the night. We weigh anchor and got back towards Javea. But this night we're staying on the other side of the bay.

It's Saturday, August 8 and we take off towards Denia.
Yes, that's right, Denia. We're even taking the same marina as last time.
There is a good reason for us returning to this place: a few things need to be done for the ship and we can get them done here. Which means: a service!

And good service we get: we're invited for dinner and we even get picked up! We're meeting with the Glaser family again, the one we introduced you to last week - and today we even have a picture.

A barbecue is done in the garden and on the balcony of Casa la Vita we eat, drink and laugh. On I way home we stop by at the Blues Bar and get to enjoy the last 4 songs of a really good live band that is playing here.

And that's the end for us and for this week and the next 3 weeks.
