07.06. - 13.06. 2004

After spending beautiful days in the Baie d`Hakehetau we sail along Ua Pou´s impressive coast to the Baie d`Hakahau, the islands largest settlement. (Bild Marquesas 6 - 018) Unfortunately there's not much room here, so we squeeze in behind the breakwater, using the bow anchor and the stern anchor, trying to avoid the swell that rushes into the bay unchecked.

Place of scarifice on the Marquesas    As if to make up for the hassle the village really is most beautiful and its inhabitants extremely friendly. Everybody greets everybody. And they also have one of these impressive sacrifice places (image left). I'm just glad the Marquesians gave up on eating others...
As we wander through the village we hear an interesting birds call and look up a huge tree in a garden.
Somehow the owners seem to misinterpret this - they call us into the garden and give us a bag full of the trees delicious fruit, a kind of pomegranate, as well as 4 hue mangoes.
We're totally thrilled and after a small chat were both parties use a terrible gibberish (French, Marquesi, English, …) we happily take our leave.

And, since we managed to obtain a few potatoes in the village shop (which is not as easy as it sounds - potatoes aren't grown here, they're all imported … if the supply ship hasn't been around for a while there are no potatoes …), back aboard SILVER BLUE, we make ourselves a delicious Labskaus, a specialty from northern Germany, made from cooked potatoes, corned beef and beetroot. That does sound a little strange, but it tastes fantastic!

At the end of the week we return to Taihoe on Nuku Hiva, our momentary "home base".
Shortly after dropping anchor there we spot a funny group. Jenny, an American one-hand sailor is transporting her dog, a kind of Newfoundland dog, in her canoe, and Leonardos, an Italian sail-maker, dog in his dinghy, together with the Spaniard Javiers dinghy onto her boat.

More funny stories … next week.

Until then, take care!
