31.05. - 06.06. 2004

This week the weather varies a bit again, but that doesn't stop us from taking the trip to another little island in the Marquesas. Our destination is the island Ua Pou, about 30 nautical miles from Nuku Hiva, but it's totally hidden in clouds as we leave Taihoe.
So we spontaneously turn towards starboard and enter the quiet Daniels Bay, where we'll spend the day. The rain showers, also quite frequent today, leave us some beautiful impressions.

We continue our journey the next morning. Today rainsqualls are flying over the water again, doing up to 40 knots, and SILVER BLUE is sailing towards Ua Pou with 8 knots speed, even though she has two reefs in her sails. As we arrive the skies open and present us with a magnificent view of the mountains above the Baie d'Hakahetau.

This is where we meet the french yacht "JADE" again. Both of us left the Galapagos at the same time. First we celebrate our reunion and then, the next day, we go on a hike to a supposedly close by waterfall with Francois, Beatrice, Lore and Luik.

And, we do find the waterfall, or rather, we hear it, but the path leading to it is totally overgrown. We keep on moving up the mountain, hoping to find a different way to it. And yes, we do find a way to get to the water. Even though it's not the waterfall, it is a nice place to go for a swim and obviously Nela and Lore quite enjoy the rest - and so does everybody else, of course.

After the countless mosquitoes feasted on us we continue up the mountain for a little bit. We got the tip that there's a German called Manfred living just under those imposing mountaintops. And, anyway, we're still looking for a good place for our picnic.

And really, after a while we reach "Manfred`s Ville". Our host isn't at home, but his marquesi wife Theresa invites us into her very modern kitchen where we can enjoy our picnic without mosquitoes.

Manfreds Ville ...    ... and his kitchen

After she served us coffee and loaded us down with (very sweet) grapefruit and limes, we start making our way back.
And that's when Manfred appears, so back to the kitchen we go, to Guava tart and plenty more stories. And then, but only after Manfred also showed us his technical inventions, amongst others his imposing, self-made water-power-generator, we finally take our leave, with even more grapefruit. Fortunately we only have to go downhill … …

More about Ua Pou: next week.

Until then ... take care!
