CW 21 2003

19.05. - 25.05.2003

Monday morning, and apparently half the world decided to show up here today during the weekend. Oh well, lessons were anyways planned with Amauri, my Spanish Professor, between 8am and 11am, and the electrician who's supposed to put in a new bilge pump automatic (it automatically starts the pumps when water gets in - and unfortunately was broken) is also supposed to come by this morning. But all the other open questions make it difficult to concentrate on the Spanish lessons.
And then - suddenly - there's a huge catamaran right in front of SILVER BLUEs' bow … and somehow it seems rather familiar. And yes, it's Chris in his 47'Lagoon "Kassoumay". I'd met this funny Englishman in Bonnaire and since then we've been exchanging experiences via e-mail. He's been so impressed by the St. Blas Islands (that's where he just came from - and where SIKVER BLUE will hopefully soon be) while I could only recommend Cartagena to him … and now he's here.
Of course we chatted through the evening and agreed to meet the next day - for a concentrated strike.
Together with Christian, the French skipper of another catamaran, we drive to "Ferrocem", the only wharf in this region that can crane large catamarans. All three of us want to give our ships a new underwater layer of paint, and not pay the usual US $ 1.000, -. And there, our concentrated action was worth it. We return around noon, each with an offer for US $ 500,- in our pockets.

In midweek I exchange on of the ropes, the good old Gleistein which my friend "Flocke" from Bremen (who by the way, makes first class wire-ropes in his company) supplied me with. I don't want to subject it to undiminished algae growth any longer.
The new line, which I got quite cheap here, is immediately used as a fishing platform by a beautiful bird. It seems to like the color. But, it also seems to suffer from a loss of appetite as soon as it sees my camera. It always interrupts its interesting fishing technique - hanging up side down from the rope to snap small fish off the surface - to pose for pictures.

John and his wife are also invited for dinner on SUILVER BLUE this week. Many years ago John "got stuck" here with his ship and by now he's the dock master of Club Nautico. He also kept an eye on SILVER BLUE while I was away.
On Saturday I have to get up early since Luznela need to be at the university at 7am, and I make use of the early, wind still hour by cleaning the main sail with my help John (a different one).
We've just finished the job as the wind starts up and SILVER BLUE begins to pull on the stern lines quite a bit. We're just going to let it dry a little bit longer and then we'll quickly take that 80qm sail down.

It's noon by now and Luznela happily returns to spend the weekend with me.
Since next weekend is a long one here we spontaneously decide on Sunday evening to go on a trip to Medellin then.
That's why the next logbook will only be available on Wednesday...
… so, if you like, I'll see you then …
take care,

TOM
