SILVER BLUE is spending the week in the bay Taiohae on the island Nuku Hiva, which is one of the largest bays in the Marquesas, yet comparatively quiet.
Since the Marquesas administrative capital is here, there's also a school, a hospital, petrol station, a bank and a few shops. There even is a yachting service station were you can have your laundry done and get an Internet connection. Since that, just like all telephone connections in the Marquesas goes via satellite, it is fairly expensive. Actually all living expenses are very high here. Since we are going to spend some time here it is rather fortunate that we've still got lots of food and drinks we bought in Panama stocked away.

And, after spending so much time in South America it is very refreshing to be here. The people are very friendly, helpful and no one seems to be longing for what others own.
The amount of flowers is also amazing, and - of course - there's lots of fruit growing on the Marquesas. New to us is the fruit noni.
In the olden days cobra, made from the coconuts, used to be the main source of income, but nowadays it's noni, which is harvested and sent to America. A factory in Utah makes syrup and other health-juices from it. Noni is supposed to have preventive and healing effects.

There are also lots of historical villagaes here, and places where old cults used to worship, where stone figures, so-called tikis, tell hole stories.

More about Nuku Hiva and the Marquesas with their impressive mountains … next week.

Until then, take care!
