CW 10 2004

01.03. - 07.03. 2004

The last week of preparations has started and huge amounts of food find their way into SILVER BLUE. Before this Pacific crossing we stock lots of supplies - it will be a long trip. And, there isn't much one can buy on those small, lonely islands in the Pacific, except maybe for a coconut from the beach. And, at those places were you can buy things you really pay for them. Definitely everything will be available in Tahiti, but definitely not a good bottle of wine for 2 dollars. Apart from the nice wine from Chile there are lots of other good and cheap things one can buy in Panama - things worth taking along, such as Italian pasta and olive oil, Columbian Coffee, international milk powder, …

All those things also need to be put away and balanced evenly. We could have probably taken - and stowed away - more, but weight also plays an important role. That's why the cool drink cans are in front, to counterweight the water and diesel tanks that are filled to the brim and the supplies stowed away in the stern.

The last step is to buy plenty of fruit and vegetables. After all, we'd like to eat halfway healthy, even aboard, and not only rely on the latest invention from the food processing industry, the tin.

We do that at a supermarket, firstly since it's a lot cheaper here, and secondly because the fruit and vegetables here have never been cooled. Once they came into contact with the cooling chain of modern distribution systems they tend to spoil very quickly when kept under normal temperatures. The supermarket is well organized, clean and the most expensive items are the onions and potatoes, US$ 17 per 50-pund-bag. On the other hand, we get 100 bananas (still green) for US$ 1,75 and a 20-kilogram bag of oranges for 3 dollars.
All of that is stored away aboard and then we're finally on the move again. On Sunday at 11 am we weigh anchor and say bye-bye with a last glimpse of Panama Cities skyline.

We had a great time here, but now we're off to new shores. With our new toy, a well strapped down 2-people canoe, we sail towards the Galapagos Islands.

More about those, next week, if you like...
Until then, take care
