CW 01 2003

23.12.2002 - 05.01.2003

On Monday I make SILVER BLUE fast in the "Club Nautico". The name might be slightly misleading; it is a commercial mooring site of rather simple make. But it is situated ideally, only 10 minutes from the old city, and offers everything you need: electricity, water and also a restaurant in which you can get a "Local Lunch" for 1,20 €.
And it is safe, just like all of Cartagena. A lot is done here for security. Two soldiers are posted in front of the marina and the military and police are very present in the whole town.
On Tuesday, first thing, SILVER BLUE is fully washed and cleaned. It's been a while since fresh water was freely available. And now, just in time for Christmas, the ship is sparkling.

Christmas carols can be heard everywhere, but with Latin-American rhythms and the whole town is a sea of lights. And it's done in a very nice and tasteful way. See for yourself:

Oh well, and after Christmas comes December 27, my birthday. The congratulations go from "old fart" to "…". Thank you very much for all your good wishes. I had my birthday menu in a restaurant in the old part of town, the "Pelicanos", whose reputation had already reached my ear in Bonaire.
It is a small restaurant, furnished lovingly, but doesn't give you a written menu. Instead, you get a constantly changing surprise menu consisting of 4 different cold and warm starters, one main course and a desert and a bottle of wine. All that for 23.000 pesos per person (almost 10 Euro) and veeeeeeerry niiiiiiiiiice!
On Saturday a huge concert with Carlos Vives follows, with really great music. The atmosphere in the stadium is impossible to describe; people are dancing as hard as their shoes can take. And in Latin America dancing means salsa or rumba, and those demand close bodily contact. That's really fun!

On Sunday I go to the beach to recover, and already the end of the year is slowly but surely approaching.
I spend New Years Eve in the old town. Really amazing, until the brake of dawn it's filled with music. Consequently New Years Day is very quiet in Cartagena and I spend the afternoon taking a walk up to the huge "Castillo". Of course, that also wants to be explored from the inside, but not today!
The other days are spent doing little jobs on the ship and exploring the town. During that I discover - can you believe it - a Bavarian restaurant.
I really couldn't miss out on the 'Erdinger Weissbier' (German beer), but I did skip the 'Schweinsbraten mit Knödeln' (pork roast with dumplings).

Since SILVER BLUE is probably going to stay in Cartagena for a while, I'll tell you about the towns history in the coming weeks and hopefully send a few impressive pictures of this beautiful city.
Here's a little incentive:

Ok then, see you in a week - if you like …
until then, take care
